Discover the best blades for making clean, precise cuts in foam.

Understanding the Slicing Cut

The slicing cut leaves a smooth, clean, finish. A couple of advantages of the slicing cut is that it removes no material and creates little to no dust. However, one disadvantage of the slicing cut is you will need to cut slower. So, there is a trade off in production volume to achieve that smooth clean finish. Selecting the right blade is essential for cutting foam efficiently. Some of the most common types of blades used for slicing foam include the Knife Edge, Wavy, and Scallop Blades. Let's take a look at those.

Knife Edge Blades

Knife Edge blades have a smooth sharp edge and no teeth. We break these blades into 2 categories: Narrow Knife Band and Wide Knife Band. Our Narrow Knife Band is available in widths from 3mm up to 1-1/4"(32mm). These are great for soft, less dense Polyurethane (PU) foams. The Wide Knife Band is available in widths from 40mm up to 4"(100mm). These blades work great on (PU) foams Polyethylene (PE) foams, re-bond, rubber, packaging materials, insulation, carpet re-cycling, textiles, cork, and leather splitting. They are commonly used on peelers, convoluters, skivers, and loopers. Your saw will need a sharpening system to ensure the blades maintain sharp cutting edges. Double edged blades are available in some sizes. Find pictures and more information here.

Wavy Blades

Wavy blades have a sharp wavy edge. The Wavy Blade cuts straight, and smoothly while leaving minimal dust in materials such as lighter foams, fabric, felt, fibrous materials, foam rubber, sponge, vinyl, leather, paper, cardboard, and filter media. The Wavy Blade works particularly well cutting fibrous materials since the wave cuts smoothly through the materials and will not pull the individual fibers like a V-Tooth product. Double edge blades are available in some sizes. Find pictures and more information here.

Scallop Blades

Scallop blades have sharp pointed teeth with deep round gullets. Scallop blades are great for cutting medium to heavy foams, insulation materials, rubber, paperboard, packaging film, foil, fiberglass, and boneless meats. Scallop blades are very aggressive blades which exudes minimal dust. The Scallop blade is a favorite blade for mattress manufacturers cutting very dense foams and works particularly well with Gel-Foams. Double edge blades are available in some sizes.
