Discover the best blade for your style of cut.

The different styles of cuts!

When working with a band saw, understanding the different styles of cuts you can make is crucial to achieving the desired result. Each style has its own unique applications and blades.

In this article, we will explore three primary types of cuts you can make with a band saw: slicing, ripping, and sawing. By understanding the nuances of each, you can make more informed decisions about the best blade for your application.

Slicing Cuts

Slicing cuts are typically used to create thin, precise pieces from a larger material. This type of cut is ideal for producing smooth clean cuts that produce basically no dust. These blades are commonly used on contour cutters, slitters, carousels, convoluters, skivers, peelers, and loopers.

To achieve a clean slicing cut, you need a Knife Edge, Wavy, or Scallop blade that can make smooth, even cuts. The key is to go slow and steady, allowing the blade to do the work without forcing it. Proper tension and alignment of the blade are also essential to ensure accuracy.

Ripping Cuts

Ripping cuts allow you to cut faster and be more productive. However, there are some tradeoffs. It will leave a rougher finish and create some dust. The more aggressive the blade, the rougher the finish, and the more dust created. These are great for cutting most polyurethane foams and are commonly used on contour cutters, bandsaws, slitters, and carousels,

For ripping cuts, you will need a blade with teeth. The most common blades for ripping cuts are V-Tooth, Conventional Tooth, and Piranha Scallop. This allows for faster cutting and helps reduce the risk of the blade overheating. It's also important to maintain a consistent feed rate.

Sawing Cuts

Sawing cuts are versatile and can be used to cut a variety of materials, including wood, metal, meat, cardboard, polyethylene foam and a lot more. This style of cut will create a kerf and more dust than than a ripping cut.

The type of blade you use for sawing cuts has set teeth and may be heat treated depending on your application. The most popular tooth styles are the conventional tooth and the hook tooth. Precision Blades Inc, also manufactures a blade with a set V-Tooth used in a lot of packaging applications.
