Understanding the Ripping Cut

Slicing cuts, discussed in our previous article, Top Blades for Slicing Foam with Precision, are characterized by their precision and smooth finish. This method ensures minimal material disruption and a clean edge, essential for applications requiring high accuracy. In contrast, ripping cuts are designed for efficiency, allowing for rapid material removal and straight cuts. While slicing prioritizes finesse and detail, ripping emphasizes speed and volume, making the choice between the two depends on the specific requirements of the project at hand. In this article we will look at V-Tooth, Conventional Tooth, and Piranha Scallop blades.

V-Tooth Blades

Precision Blades V-Tooth blades are the perfect choice when cutting soft to medium materials including foams, plastics, rubber, and packaging materials. V-Tooth blades cut more aggressively than knife edge blades and are commonly called serrated blades. The teeth on V-Tooth blades are very sharp and look like upside down V's, which is where they get their name. Most sizes are available in single and double edge (teeth on both sides of the blade) for cutting both directions. They are available in 6, 10, and 14 TPI's. You can get more information and see pictures here.

Conventional Tooth Blades

The Conventional Tooth blade is a more aggressive version of the V-Tooth. The Conventional Tooth is a directional tooth with a 0° rake angle and should be considered when cutting denser foams and harder materials. Like V-Tooth blades, most sizes are also available in single and double edge for cutting both directions. They are also available in 3, 4, 6, 10, and 14 TPI's. You can get more information and see pictures here.

Piranha Scallop Blades

Precision Blades Piranha Scallop blades were developed by the Precision Blades founder. The Piranha Scallop is specifically designed to cut through medium to very dense foams evenly and smoothly. The Piranha Scallop combines the aggression of a V-Tooth blade with the smooth cut of a Scallop blade. The Piranha Scallop is the most versatile blade in our slicing and ripping categories making it the perfect choice if you are cutting a wide range of foams, for mattress manufacturers, cutting very dense foams, and it works particularly well with Gel-Foams. The Piranha Scallop also works well for cutting plastics and packaging materials. You can get more information and see pictures here.
